Two women and a baby were injured after they were struck by a Cadillac in Miami Beach on Jan. 21 right before 4:30 p.m.
The teenager stole the Cadillac from his stepfather and was turning onto Dickens Avenue from 77th Street when the victims were struck. The women, ages 51 and 21 were in the crosswalk, as was the 3-month old infant in her stroller.
The force of the impact fractured the 51-year-old’s hip. She also suffered a head laceration. The 21-year-old suffered some minor bruising. The infant suffered contusions on her face when the stroller was knocked over.
After the teenager struck the women and infant, he put the vehicle into reverse and headed back onto 77th Street, according to police. Someone witnessed the accident and followed the Cadillac while calling 911. When the police chased the vehicle, the teen stopped and got out of the car. He was taken into custody without incident.
Authorities said the teenager confessed to the incident after waiving his right to an attorney. His stepfather stated that he didn’t want to press charges for the vehicle’s theft, but the minor is still facing charges of driving without a license and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily injury.
A juvenile court judge ordered that the teen be on home detention and said that changes were needed in the home. This was after the judge found out that the teen had missed school 27 times.
