It’s shocking how some people feel that it’s acceptable to put other people’s lives at risk. Take, for example, a case reported on Feb. 24 out of Miami.
Miami police reported that a woman in her 40s was killed after being hit by a vehicle on that afternoon. The vehicle had been involved in a pursuit with police and ran a stop sign. It hit one vehicle belonging to an off-duty officer and then went on to jump the sidewalk and strike the woman.
The vehicle, a Hyundai Elantra, was being chased as it had been stolen in an armed carjacking. The people inside were also suspects in an armed robbery that morning.
The vehicle flipped after hitting the woman, then it struck a light pole and several parked vehicles. One of the people inside suffered serious injuries, and they, along with three others, were taken to the hospital.
In this crash, three police officers were injured. Fortunately, the off-duty officer was not hurt when their vehicle was impacted. Sadly, the woman who was struck did succumb to her injuries.
In cases like this, those who are injured have a right to pursue a claim against the drivers who decided to put their lives at risk. Families of those who lose loved ones have a right to seek wrongful death lawsuits to resolve their losses.
This situation is just a single example of how quickly people’s lives can change. It’s necessary for drivers to be aware that their actions could affect many people, including the families of those they hurt or kill.
