How to calculate three-second rule

Home /  Blog /  Motor Vehicle Accidents /  How to calculate three-second rule

The best way to avoid tailgating is to use the three-second rule. This simply stipulates that you need to be three seconds behind the next car at all times. By using this system, you don’t actually have to think about the physical distance – such as trying to stay 200 yards behind another car or something of this nature. No matter how fast you’re traveling, counting off the time will automatically adjust your following distance.

To calculate this, all you need to do is watch for the vehicle ahead of you to pass a stationary object. You can even use the lines on the road, although it may be easier to use a cross street or a road sign. But after that vehicle passes this stationary point, count off three seconds to make sure that your car doesn’t also pass that point too soon. It’s a simple tactic that works on the interstate, on rural highways or on city streets.

Why don’t people do this all the time?

In practice, many drivers tailgate and do not live three seconds of space. They may even be surprised by how much space they need, if it was demonstrated to them.

This just shows that they are oblivious. They’re not trying to drive dangerously. They don’t understand how much distance is required to be safe. They think nothing of it until something unexpected happens, and then they cause a rear-end accident. They may even try to blame the car ahead of them, when the real issue is that they were accidentally tailgating before the crash.
